Hamsalekha, born Gangaraju on June 23, 1951, in Tulasikatte near Akkipete, Bangalore, is a prolific Indian composer and songwriter. Known for his immense contribution to South Indian cinema, especially Kannada films, he has also worked as a screenwriter, dialogue writer, instrumentalist, and conductor. His original name was changed by his teacher Lavani Neelakantappa to “Hamsalekha.“ His film career began in 1973 when he was introduced by director M. N. Prasad, who gave him the opportunity to write the song “Neena Bhagavantha“ for the film Triveni. His debut as a composer came with the 1981 unreleased film Rahuchandra. However, he gained major recognition in 1985 as a dialogue and lyric writer for the film Naanu Nanna Hendthi. Hamsalekha's popularity soared after his collaboration with the actor-director V. Ravichandran, starting with the film Premaloka in 1987, which was a blockbuster hit. This marked the beginning of a successful partnership that revolutionized Kannada cinema soundtracks in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He has been lauded for his ability to blend various music genres, including Western, Indian classical, folk, pop, and ghazals, showcasing his versatility. Notable among his achievements are his songs with philosophical depth, rustic folk tunes, patriotic anthems, and love ballads. His work on films like Shaapa, Halli Maestru, Aakasmika, and Hagalu Vesha exemplify his ability to touch on various themes and moods. In addition to his film work, Hamsalekha has contributed to stage music and written stories, screenplays, and dialogues for films like Avane Nanna Ganda and Gandharva. He has also been a mentor to several prominent artists in the Kannada film industry. He is married to Latha Hamsalekha, a playback singer from the 1990s. They have three children: Alankar, Tejaswini, and Nandini, who are also involved in the arts. Hamsalekha's influence extends beyond music; he laid the foundation for Desi Music University in 2010, aimed at fostering traditional Indian music.
