Eichsfeldlied [Anthem of Eichsfeld][+English translation]

The Eichsfeldlied is the regional anthem of Eichsfeld. The text of the song is by Hermann Iseke, a well-known Eichsfelder homeland poet. The anthem was first printed in the “Eichsfelder Marienkalender 1901“ under the title “Eichsfelder Sang“, together with another song. It should be sung according to the melody of the student song “O old boy's splendor“. The today sung melody, however, comes from the teacher and composer Karl Wisniewski from Heiligenstadt and was composed in 1902. The Eichsfeldlied is sung at many private, public and church events and therefore has a strong identity-forming function for the Eichsfelder. This importance was strengthened by the experience of a separate Eichsfeld in the course of the German division, as well as by the difficulties of the predominantly Catholic Eichsfelder in the GDR to preserve their regional identity in a historically Protestant, atheistic and centralized state at the time.
