Erich Wolfgang Korngold's “Songs of the Clown,“ on texts from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, received their first performance at a workshop sponsored by the great stage and screen director Max Reinhardt. In the late 1930s, he established a training program in Hollywood to develop budding film actors. In 1941 the workshop presented a program entitled “Shakespeare's Women, Clowns, and Songs“ which featured a number of songs by Korngold.
