First Photographs of Lebanon (Including Baalbek) 1860-1885 Bonfils. Old World, Photochrome, Megalith

Howdy ya’ll. Today we are in for an incredibly deep dive into the first photographs of Lebanon, including Ancient Baalbek, with the photographs today being attributed to Felix Bonfils. These images, as with most images from The Middle East, Africa, and The Far East, have a “circa” date given. These images are dated between roughly 1860-1885, making them some of the first photographs ever taken in Lebanon. Right off the bat you will notice that for the date given, it’s surprising to see how detailed these photographs are. In digital format, some of these photographs are over 45 MB. For example, we see running water in multiple images, photographed with extreme detail in the mid 19th century. We also have wide landscape shots, beautiful panoramic photographs, and a cornucopia of early images by Bonfils, which were said to have been created as souvenirs for European travelers to the area. The photographer, Bonfils, was also said to use “Photochrome”, or Old World Color Photography by the year 1880. We will dive into all these important photographs and a brief review of the currently accepted history of Bonfils and Baalbek. Please like, share, subscribe, & enjoy!
