Flooding in Turkey’s Black Sea region has claimed at least nine lives, and at least one person is missing, officials said Thursday. Floods due to heavy rains hit the northern Black Sea region on Wednesday, leaving six people dead in the Kastamonu province and one missing in the Bartin province, said the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD). Rescue and relief teams have been deployed to flood-hit areas, and the search for the missing is ongoing, according to officials. While evacuations of some areas continue, the Turkish Red Crescent is also on the scene to help people affected by the natural disaster. A group of courageous friends formed a human chain to save a puppy from drowning in the Black Sea off the coast of Sinop, Turkey, as heavy flooding struck the area on Wednesday. The Turkish coast guard was called in to rescue locals stuck on rooftops in the Black Sea town of Bozkurt as torrents of destructive floodwater hit, dramatic video showed. Turkey’s Coast Guard Command said on Thursday that “the evacuation of our citizens trapped in the flood-affected areas” was continuing.
