Ever since the invasion began in 2022, this country has effectively been shut off to the Western world. Flights between Europe and Russia were halted. Trade was stopped. Most border crossings were closed. And yet I found myself at one of the few crossings that remained open: Narva, in far eastern Estonia. I had never been to Russia, and as an American, now definitely wasn't the best time to change that. But no one knows what the future may hold. I was on a trip across Eurasia, and there was no way I could just ignore the world's largest country. I spent a month getting the visa, and worked on my Russian for half a year. This is the first chapter of my journey across Russia to the Far East. I was beyond nervous. What did America's old Cold War foe have in store for me..
