In 2018, researchers uncovered seven small tombs under a Byzantine-era rubbish dump. In one of the tombs are crocodiles that are mummified. The crocodiles are not treated with resin; they were preserved just as they are. This incredible find has given researchers the rare opportunity to study these crocodiles and gain an understanding of their life 2500 years ago. The mummies found were from ten adult crocodiles of different species; their remains were unearthed from a tomb at Qubbat al-Hawa on the west bank of the Nile River.
