Why John Brown Really Wasn’t A Hero

John Brown is remembered fondly in American history as a martyr who sacrificed himself for the cause of abolition, and often we hear asked is John Brown a hero or a terrorist, with his crusade against slavery very commonly held above the horrendus actions he committed, especially by more liberal historians. Because of this, Brown's crimes and questionable character are swept under the rug or excused in the name of abolition, but if we look past that, simply at John Brown's actions and intentions, we find a man who was either mad or just plain evil. This is why John Brown really wasn't a hero, for his role in the outbreak of the Civil War, for the crimes he committed against civilians, and for his very own conspiracy to secede from the union.
