► ABOUT THIS HIKE
In May 2024 I hiked the GRR2 route with a few detours and side-trips. I started at Saint-Denis, passed by Roche Écrite, and descended into the Mafate Cirque volcanic caldera, known for its remote villages only accessible by foot. I then trekked through Îlet d'Aurère, Îlet à Malheur, and Grand Place, before climbing to the picturesque village of Cilaos via the Col du Taïbit pass. From Cilaos, I ascended to the highest peak in the Indian Ocean, Piton des Neiges, enjoying breathtaking views. Continuing south, I hiked through the Plaine des Cafres to Bourg-Murat, and then traversed the lunar-like landscape of Plaine des Sables. The journey included a side-trip to the active volcano, Piton de la Fournaise, before descending to Saint-Philippe, ending the hike with stunning ocean views at Cap Méchant.
