A Womb to Let / 腹貸し女 (1968) dir. Koji Wakamatsu

Examines the relationships of a wealthy middle-aged man and his young wife and that of the man’s daughter, who is the same age as his spouse, and her student boyfriend. Whereas the young wife is obviously motivated by a desire for a comfortable life and betrays her husband by having an affair with her gynecologist, the daughter is genuinely in love with her boyfriend. However, Wakamatsu doesn’t paint the picture as black and white as it first appears. The daughter is tormented by her father’s primarily sexual relationship with his new wife, but the daughter’s own boyfriend wants her to participate in a free-love orgy he and his hippie friends have organized. When the daughter realizes she’s pregnant by her beau, her stepmother arranges for an abortion at her gynecologist...
