03-04. Follow Along- Unhappy Employee Scene Practice 03. Strengthen Your Workplace Influence Instructions Prepare to take notes in a way that works best for you. During the video, keep track of each instance when a negotiation skill occurs. How many did you spot during the video? Script SANDY: Brandon, would it be a bad idea for us to talk about what happened earlier today? BRANDON: No, but I’m a little concerned about what you might wanna talk about. SANDY: You’re probably thinking I’m a new manager, and I’m coming in here, and I’m steamrolling over everybody and trying to get everything done my way. BRANDON: Now, I don’t necessarily think that. I do realize that there are difficulties with being a new manager on the team. SANDY: You’re probably questioning my ability to take on this role since I’m newer here and you’ve been here for a long time. BRANDON: Well, that’s exactly the thing. I have been here for a long time, a dedicated employee for fifteen years. And this just seems like a complete waste of my talents. SANDY: Waste of your talents? BRANDON: Well, I am the best in the field. And the field is where I should be. Not inside training new people. SANDY: It sounds like you really love being out in the field. BRANDON: Well this has got me feeling like I’m a caged animal. SANDY: Caged animal? BRANDON: Yeah. Like, I do not enjoy being stuck inside at a desk. That is not my primary role here. SANDY: I’m sorry. It feels like I made a decision without consulting you, and you find that insulting. BRANDON: Yeah. You know, I’m sorry I ran out on you earlier. I shouldn’t have did that but you’re pulling me out of my primary role. SANDY: It sounds like I’ve failed to be clear about how new hires could benefit from your experience. BRANDON: No, that’s not necessarily it. I just wanna make sure that the company is using its resources properly. SANDY: Is grooming our new employees for success wasted time? BRANDON: No. But it won’t be easy. I know we’re a small company. And I’ve been here since we started. And I basically created our process. The reality is, I just—I do not have the time. I’m completely swamped on my other projects. SANDY: It sounds like you hold the knowledge about the process and have limited time and resources to write it down. BRANDON: That’s right. SANDY: How can I help solve this for us? BRANDON: Well, maybe if I had somebody that shadowed me, that followed me around. I could dictate the process to them. They can transcribe everything that I tell them. That’d probably save us a lot of time and effort. SANDY: Okay. I’ll ask for additional budget to hire another person. BRANDON: That works.
