Tarzan’s Friend. A forester, with the dog Tarzan, was riding through the thick forest. Suddenly his horse stopped. The forester felt that something had frightened him. He looked round and saw a pack of wolves coming to them. Then the dog Tarzan ran over to the wolves ,sniffed and disappeared with them in the forest. The forester remembered the day when he had found a helpless hungry wolf cub. He picked it up, brought it home, warmed it up, and gave it food and put it in Tarzan’s dog house. Soon the cub grew up. Then the forester took the young wolf back to the place where he had found him and left him there. Now the forester understood why the wolves hadn’t attacked him or dog. Among them was Tarzan’s friend. Tarzan returned home the next morning safe and sound. Today I will tell you about some special words called collective nouns. Which sentence is correct? My class goes to the cinema every Sunday. My class go to the theatre monthly.. Actually, both! But why? Let’s find out… So, there are some words that can be and singular, and plural at the same time. For example, class. A class = 1 class, one social unit. At the same time, a class has more than one person, so it’s plural, it has several members. Such nouns are called collective nouns. They collect several members into a group. So how can we understand whether a collective noun should be plural or singular? Here’s how: A. If the group acts together in unison = then it acts as ONE. All members do the same thing at the same time. So we use a singular verb, singular pronouns. If each member does something different = then the group consists of individual members who are all doing different things, so we should use a plural verb, a plural pronoun. Remember!!! A collective noun is SINGULAR if it acts as a unit. Our staff works hard every day.(Все сотрудники упорно работают каждый день) A collective noun is PLURAL if the members act as individuals. Th A team always go home after training. (Each member goes to a different house, maybe at different times) B. Nouns (subjects, activities) ending in –S are used with singular verb Physics is my favorite subject C. Nouns which have singular and plural form depend on the context.
