White Sea petroglyphs, Karelia The archaeological complex “White Sea Petroglyphs” consists of drawings (etchings) on rocks and more than 30 ancient campsites. The White Sea petroglyphs are located on the islands of the Vyg River. They were created by ancient people 4500-5500 years ago. In total, 39 groups with more than 2000 separate figures have been discovered. One can see the images of people and animals, scenes of hunting, battles and ritual processions. The oldest depiction of a man on skis in Europe was found here. The size of the figures ranges from 3 cm to 3 m, while most of the figures are 15-60 cm.
